The headlines recently in daily papers as well as periodicals give the impression that the pharmaceutical industry is bad and broken. The continued success of this industry will rely on reinvention. Consideration must be given to the human cost if this industry should fizzle. Other industries are driven by products and inventions that cater to conveniences and trends. However, the pharmaceutical industry caters to life.
The time for reinvention is upon all of us in the industry and the new model must support the notion that if new and innovative drugs dwindle, it will come at a cost to human health and lives.
What that means to me as a member of this industry is to reinvent with the values of managing with aloha.
Hoohana-working with intent and purpose: First and foremost is for the members in the pharmaceutical industry to recognize and discover their hoohana. Mine and the company I work for is to deliver medical science to improve the quality of lives.
Kuleana-one's personal sense of responsibility: The responsibity that encompasses all the good that pharmaceutical and the health sciences bring to the world. My sense of responsibilty is to assure that my actions and the actions of the company I work for deliver with pono. Be truthful and transparent with the messages and be forthright with the answers.
Stephen Covey talks of finding your voice. The best way to do this is through the value of alaka'i. Leading with initiative, and with the good example you can guide others when you have gained their trust and respect.
This is the plan for reinvention that I have embraced. Kulia i ka nu'u combined with 'ike loa driven by my kuleana and exercised by alaka'i.
For those of you who have a negative opinion about the pharmaceutical industry, please know that our ho'ohana is crystal clear and all the bad or misinformed press releases do not recognize the reinvention that is taking place. We seek through ho'omau to malama the people that we serve. Through reinvention people will recognize that the industry cares and that drives our performance to help others."We give and become unselfish. We accept responsibility unconditionally...It comes from the heart." Through reinvention the industry will indeed embrace the value of Ka la hiki ola.
