I decide on the next value theme for each month quite far in advance, though I normally will not flesh them out in full for Managing with Aloha Coaching until a few weeks out. Often, something exceptionally wonderful happens.

ALOHA ~ ~ ~ For those who may be newly arriving here, to Managing with Aloha Coaching: Each month, we adopt a Hawaiian value to study together in a universal way, thus the tagline you see up top: Value Your Month, Value Your Life. This is my Day One Essay for June 2008. Welcome! |
Day One of a month will arrive within a kind of magic...
The value I had chosen as much as nine months ago has its assigned time arrive in a way that tells me Providence has been hard at work, laboring with diligence on everything else in my life, so that when the value-connected time arrives I will focus intently. Not only that; I will love every second of that focus. I will Ho‘ohana, work with purpose, passion, and full intention.
So it is again with June. Our value is Ka lā hiki ola, “the dawning of a new day.”
Here is the very first thing I want you to know about Ka lā hiki ola:
You can choose to have the “dawning of a new day”
whenever you want to,
whenever you need to, and (this is important),
whenever you decide to.
I have decided that I want and need to choose Today, and I therefore do.
Grab hold of Your New
“New” is always so tantalizing, isn’t it. By nature, though some cynics who wax nostalgic will seek to temper our enthusiasm (ignore them!) we know that “new” means a fresh energy of some kind, and the hope and promise of some extraordinary difference.
New is innovative, new is bold; new is never lowly or unimportant.
New is novel, new is contemporary; new is never tired or old-fashioned.
New is new-fangled. New is up-to-the-minute. New is original.
And here is that extraordinary difference: No matter our age, no matter our circumstance, new can always be us.
We can be tantalizing.
We can be fresh.
We can be innovative.
We can be bold.
We can be novel.
We can be contemporary.
We can be new-fangled, up-to-the-minute and original.
We can, and we will.
We are the Ho‘ohana Community, and we can do whatever we choose to do Kākou ke Aloha, together and with Aloha. This, for example, is a photo about how the Ho‘ohana Community continues to thrive and grow. [A short story about the photo is here.]
Welcome to our new feeling for June 2008: Ka lā hiki ola, the value of hope and promise.
Tomorrow: An announcement about the New MWAC, and how we will approach our value-based learning this month (and until the next Ka lā hiki ola we choose!)

Rosa, this is a month I'm greatly looking forward to sharing with you.
I was so moved by your photo and message on flickr during the week (will it be featuring here soon?). It's very moving to see shots of your sky - it makes me feel closer to you. But I loved the words you wrote with it too:
"With every sunrise we get another shot at perfecting our lives, another fresh chance to be all we can possibly be. Another chance to say mahalo, thank you."
Mahalo.

Mahalo Joanna. I have just added one of those Flickr images you are thinking of to Talking Story, with a trackback here too so you can see it! The day I posted it on Flickr was one of those ways I was feeling “Providence” was telling me, “Okay, let’s roll with your June theme: I’m ready, are you?”
I am excited about the coming month here too Joanna, and you have been another very uplifting influence for me with your Confident Writing coaching. Here is part of your recent theme that was such an affirmation for me, for you know we share this belief!
“The decision to narrow my focus, 12 times a year, helps me to write – with intention, with an end in mind, with a strong sense of purpose.
It also just helps me to write.
The constraint of the topic, the narrowing of the focus, acts like a prompt to the creative, unconscious mind, generating idea after idea about ways to explore it, to dive into it, to ask others to talk about it, to write about it.”

What Joanna coaches us, specifically with writing in mind, applies in the same way to the habit-building we seek to create by means of aligning our daily actions with our values. Please do click over to read her article there.

Rosa, I'm excited to read this month's posts. Ka lā hiki ola is going to be very applicable to my life right now. This is the point where in all hopes I'll be moving all my work online so I'm fully mobile. (It's gonna be a lot of hope, and some luck!) So quite a few changes coming up.
I find it amazing that you're able to plan and flesh out your posts so far ahead. That's a skill that I haven't been able to capture while blogging, yet.
I used to work as a small newspaper editor and planned a small magazine, which I definitely had to plan out all my details then. Although since it's now two years ago that was, I seem to have lost that ability!
Cheers!

Hau‘oli la hanau Cody – Happy Birthday! What a treat and honor for you to be spending a moment of your evening with me here: I do hope this was a wonderful day for you - It is Ka lā hiki ola for you in more way than one!
A preview to one of my articles to come Cody: I have been known to say with some repetition that “wishing and hoping is not a strategy…” for I am not a fan of “hoping” the verb, but a huge evangelist of “hope” the noun. In short, Ka lā hiki ola is the value of a certainty of hope and promise. It is that certainty and confidence in your new day that is my birthday wish for you Cody, today and every day forward.
Mahalo Cody, for deciding to Ho‘ohana, and work on your purpose, within the company of our Ho‘ohana Community. Your spirit and enthusiasm has been such a joy in the short time I have known you!
