Inclusiveness and Togetherness are Not the same, yet Collectively they are Kākou
Let’s stretch our thinking about Kākou.
~ Kākou means all of us together.
~ Kākou is the value of inclusiveness, where differences are valued, and expertise is shared.
In brief, Kākou is the value of togetherness and inclusiveness.
Today’s stretching is this: How are those two words different? How might your management actions be different if you focus on them one at a time, and separately?
We will often start with inclusiveness, (and we did so here: Beat 1 Coaching for Kākou: Who is your We?) to be sure that we are including everyone.
Yet after we accomplish that, how do we keep everyone together? When you really think about it, there are no guarantees that inclusiveness also fosters togetherness, is there.
What do we do to include …
and then
What do we do to keep together?
Here is another way of looking at this, in a graphic borrowed from Kathy Sierra: these two were included in a software release, but they are not really together in it... I kept it smaller on purpose - Click on the image and you will see it in a bigger window.
Kākou messages are one way we foster togetherness. What are others?
Kākou Action Step: As you plan the coming week in Step 2 of your 5-Step Weekly Review, plan for one action that you will take to keep your primary work team together in Lōkahi Rhythm. If you think of more than one thing, save your second thought for the next week, and then your third for the week after that.
That repetition, week after week, could be the Kākou guarantee you would like to have, and you will be the Kākou catalyst.
